I can hear Will Smith singing “Summertime“ as I type this. It’s HOT in Charleston. Temperature wise and fishing wise. The summer months in Charleston Harbor offer a ton of options for the outdoor enthusiast. The bull reds are here spawning. The summer trout and flounder are everywhere. We have the largest bonnethead sharks in the world. And the tarpon are starting to show up in decent numbers. Reds on the flats and in the grass are also a great time.
The past week has been exceptionally good fishing with the smaller tide swings. Spanish mackerels have been making their usual appearance out by the jetties and we’ve even been catching some further inshore. The giant black drum are around as well with some reaching into the 40-50 pound range. May through October are definitely the best months to fish in Charleston if you want to tangle with the biggest redfish and black drums you’ll ever catch! Here are some shots from the past few days. Currently I’m booking into August and September so call me asap to get in on the action! I also have a few days open still in October, November, and December, which are my favorite months for keeping fish in Charleston. Lots of big trout around then so come get in on the action!

We’re in full summer swing around Charleston and Mt Pleasant right now. Menhaden are here, fingers crossed mullet are swarming, and on occasion the deep hole shrimping is great. The largest inshore flounders of the year are here right now through August. The lower tides will push them towards the middle of the creeks and they’ll be closer to the edges on the higher tides.
We’re catching good numbers of keeper speckled trout and flounders right now in between chasing big bull reds in the 20-50 pound range. It is summertime, so there’s always plenty of sharks out there to either target, or just weed through. No matter what you’re looking for, you can catch it right now! Capt. Jamie Hough 843-364-1759 The boat is clean, sanitized, and ready to help your group enjoy a day of social distancing on the waters of Charleston! The fishing has been great and the waterways are way less crowded than usual which is adding up to some really fun trips lately. Water temps are slowly creeping up and the spring bite is in full effect. The big trout are here and spawning which makes for some great action and the bull reds are starting to creep their way into the harbor as well. Needless to say there are plenty of fish out there for the kids to catch and the trophy reds are here for the trophy hunters! There is a ton of bait around also so as long as the conditions and weather are right, the fishing is jam up right now! Call me asap and get your trip scheduled! 843-364-1759! The air temps are steadily rising and so are the water temps. The menhaden have arrive in droves. and with them, the big bull redfish have moved into the harbor for their summer spawn and the sharks were right on their heels. The Spanish and bluefish are around when the conditions are right and can be caught on top water plugs and gold spoons. The trout have been biting just ok this summer so far but better than expected after this winter's freeze. Make sure you find clean, moving water for the trout. The #1 tip I can give you for all of the summertime fish is to use the bait that the schools want, not just what is easiest for you to get. Catch menhaden, buy blue crabs, and have minnows or shrimp on the boat at all times. You do this and you'll have a great day of fishing. Don't take the lazy way out. You'll wind up drinking beer all day or at one of the bars on Shem Creek because you weren't catching anything. Or you could take the easiest way out and just call me! 843-364-1759. Cheers and best of luck. And remember, you can't catch em from the couch so get out there!
The water temps are back up where they need to be and it’s in the 70’s all week this week and next. As most of you know, we had a trout kill after the first of the year but they’ll come back strong just like they did last time and the time before that. It’s a cycle that’s been going on since the beginning of time. The redfish, black drums, and sheepshead are still here and out in full force. I have plenty of dates available and as always, I GUARANTEE fish! If we don’t catch what we’re after, you go again for free!
Capt. Jamie Hough 843-364-1759 www.theredfishmafia.com www.flatspotcharters.com This week I’m not that booked up. Actually not booked at all. So I’m getting all of my gear ready for tournament season. Below is a list of things that I think every angler should carry with them when traveling for Redfish or inshore tournaments. These are the things that I take with me. It’s a lot of stuff, I know. But I have a Decked Truck Bed Storage System as well as a regular truck bed tool box. Ideally you can fit all of this in your vehicle so that you’re 100 prepared. I hope this helps! Cheers and good luck! -A floor jack for quick change of tires!
-2 cans of “Fixaflat” -At least 1 roll of shop towels -assorted stainless nuts, bolts, and screws -5200 -Jumper Cables -Extension Chord(s) -grease gun and grease -extra hub and bearings -extra trolling motor and power pole remotes -an extra battery and battery charger(s) -20 volt Impact wrench. Make sure you have stainless sockets for the truck AND the trailer lugs. Often they are different sizes. -Screw gun and charger -First aid kit including Lidocain and syringes if possible (for hook removal) -rubbing alcohol for multiple reasons -Electrical Dikes and some heat shrink but connectors -Scissors!!!! For a hundred different reasons Capt. Jamie Hough 843-364-1759 www.theredfishmafia.com www.flatspotcharters.com The SC Coast has endured an extremely cold winter thus far. Water temps have dipped into the mid 30’s for the first time since the winter of 2010-2011. What does this mean? It’s a cyclical pattern that has been happening for thousands of years. Some of the fish suffer. The majority of those are sea trout. The DNR has not released “trout kill l” estimates as of yet but I’m guessing it’ll be somewhere around 75%. Which is huge. It will take a few years to get back to Good but it will get back there thanks to conservation efforts by SCDNR and the recreational fishing community. In the meantime, our redfish, black drum, and sheepshead populations are doing just fine and the fishing is great. So don’t let the “trout kill” talk keep you off of the water. Get out there and enjoy it! Before you know it, it’ll be 1000 degrees again and there’ll be so many boats on the water that you can’t find a spot to fish.
Capt. Jamie Hough 843-364-1759 www.theredfishmafia.com www.flatspotcharters.com Last week was a tough one. We went from catching 30-100 Big Trout and a few Reds every trip to having a hard time finding Trout that would bite. Why? Because of water current, water temperature, and water color. The full moon tides, coupled with a southerly wind direction, made for warming water temps and extreme tide fluctuations which dirty up the water and increase the current speeds. The Trout were still there, as evidenced on my 12 inch Raymarine Axiom, they just didn’t want to play nice.
Now that air temps and tide ranges have dropped back down, the water will clean up and the water temps are plummeting! Which means they are gonna chomp for the next two weeks! I can’t wait to get back out there! Call now and book what could be the best Speckled Trout trip you’ll ever go on! Capt. Jamie Hough 843-364-1759 Water temps are already dropping back down and the moon tides are getting back close to normal. I’m open Dec 8-18 if you want to have a Trout and Redfish trip you’ll never forget! Guaranteed fish or you don’t pay! 843-364-1759 You need Christmas filets and I need Christmas money! It’s a win win!
The wintertime Fishing is in full swing. Tons of Trout around with an average length of 15-17 inches and the redfish are starting to school up in huge numbers as well. Don’t let the cold overnight temps deter you! As the water temps get lower, the fishing will get even better. There are still some big bull Reds out off of the beaches along with some groupers and snappers on the nearshore wrecks.
