We’re in full summer swing around Charleston and Mt Pleasant right now. Menhaden are here, fingers crossed mullet are swarming, and on occasion the deep hole shrimping is great. The largest inshore flounders of the year are here right now through August. The lower tides will push them towards the middle of the creeks and they’ll be closer to the edges on the higher tides.

We’re catching good numbers of keeper speckled trout and flounders right now in between chasing big bull reds in the 20-50 pound range. It is summertime, so there’s always plenty of sharks out there to either target, or just weed through. No matter what you’re looking for, you can catch it right now!

This week I’m not that booked up. Actually not booked at all. So I’m getting all of my gear ready for tournament season. Below is a list of things that I think every angler should carry with them when traveling for Redfish or inshore tournaments. These are the things that I take with me. It’s a lot of stuff, I know. But I have a Decked Truck Bed Storage System as well as a regular truck bed tool box. Ideally you can fit all of this in your vehicle so that you’re 100 prepared.  I hope this helps! -A floor jack for quick change of tires! 
-2 cans of “Fixaflat”
-At least 1 roll of shop towels
-assorted stainless nuts, bolts, and screws
-5200
-Jumper Cables
-Extension Chord(s)
-grease gun and grease
-extra hub and bearings 
-extra trolling motor and power pole remotes
-an extra battery and battery charger(s)
-20 volt Impact wrench. Make sure you have stainless sockets for the truck AND the trailer lugs. Often they are different sizes. 
-Screw gun and charger
-First aid kit including Lidocain and syringes if possible (for hook removal) 
-rubbing alcohol for multiple reasons 
-Electrical Dikes and some heat shrink but connectors
-Scissors!!!! For a hundred different reasons

The SC Coast has endured an extremely cold winter thus far. Water temps have dipped into the mid 30’s for the first time since the winter of 2010-2011. What does this mean? It’s a cyclical pattern that has been happening for thousands of years. Some of the fish suffer. The majority of those are sea trout. The DNR has not released “trout kill l” estimates as of yet but I’m guessing it’ll be somewhere around 75%. Which is huge. It will take a few years to get back to Good but it will get back there thanks to conservation efforts  by SCDNR and the recreational fishing community. In the meantime, our redfish, black drum, and sheepshead populations are doing just fine and the fishing is great. So don’t let the “trout kill” talk keep you off of the water. Get out there and enjoy it! Before you know it, it’ll be 1000 degrees again and there’ll be so many boats on the water that you can’t find a spot to fish.

Last week was a tough one. We went from catching 30-100 Big Trout and a few Reds every trip to having a hard time finding Trout that would bite. Why? Because of water current, water temperature, and water color. The full moon tides, coupled with a southerly wind direction, made for warming water temps and extreme tide fluctuations which dirty up the water and increase the current speeds. The Trout were still there, as evidenced on my 12 inch Raymarine Axiom, they just didn’t want to play nice.

Now that air temps and tide ranges have dropped back down, the water will clean up and the water temps are plummeting! Which means they are gonna chomp for the next two weeks! I can’t wait to get back out there! Call now and book what could be the best Speckled Trout trip you’ll ever go on!
